The mango was named after Afonso de Albuquerque, seafarer and second governor of Portuguese India.
The Portuguese produced the graft using the special grafting technique exceptional variety of Western Alphonso, also called Queen of the Mangos. Its delicate, fibrous yellow-orange pulp has an exotic, sweet aroma with a smoky aftertaste.
